Thank you to IKEA & Tunnel to Towers!

GBCares is very excited to be receiving a beautiful donation of IKEA furniture today, thanks to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation! Because of the limited quantity a lottery was held from our database of 700+ residents collected since Sandy, for those who said they needed furniture. Those families who were selected were called to set up an appointment for pickup. If you did not receive a call, you are welcome to come and put your name on a waiting list to hopefully be helped on a 1st-come/1st-served basis. A huge Thank You to IKEA & Tunnel to Towers!

‘NYC Build it Back’ to Help NY’ers Rebuild after Sandy

http://www.nyc.gov/html/recovery/html/home/home.shtml

NYC Build it Back provides multiple pathways to help affected residents return to more sustainable housing and recover out-of-pocket costs resulting from the storm. Beginning next month, registrants will be contacted by a Housing Recovery Specialist who will help them review their options and guide them through each step of the process.

NYC Build it Back provides four pathways to help New Yorkers affected by Hurricane Sandy return to sustainable homes:

  • Repair: A NYC Build it Back professional contractor can help eligible participants whose homes require minor to moderate repairs. Registrants also have the option of selecting their own contractor within Federal and program guidelines.
  • Rebuild: If a home is substantially damaged and needs to be rebuilt, qualifying participants can choose a home model that is designed specifically for their community, uses the best available resiliency standards and is designed by a NYC Build it Back developer. Alternatively, registrants can choose their own architect and contractor to develop and build their homes within Federal and program guidelines.
  • Reimbursement: The City can also help participants recover eligible out-of-pocket costs for minor repairs already made to their homes that satisfy all Department of Housing and Urban Development and other requirements.
  • Acquisition: Some owners may want to voluntarily sell their homes and in some cases, the City will be able to work with communities to strategically redevelop these properties in a smarter, more resilient way. Housing Recovery Specialists will be able to explain these options.

NYC Build it Back complements the assistance already provided by FEMA, private insurance claims and other sources. Homeowners, landlords and cooperative and condominium owners with primary residences in the five boroughs are encouraged to apply to find out how they may be eligible for the program. Professionals will assess the damage of homes in the program to determine the costs of repairs or rebuilding, including elevating homes when necessary. Assistance will also be made available to qualifying renters who participate in the program.

Thank you, Brooklyn Community Foundation!

Thank you to the Brooklyn Community Foundation for all of their support in the rebuilding of Gerritsen Beach.

Published on May 20, 2013
The Brooklyn Community Foundation’s Brooklyn Recovery Fund was established in the days following Superstorm Sandy to provide a direct channel for local giving, in partnership with the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. 100% of all funds are supporting coordinated relief and rebuilding efforts with neighborhood-based nonprofit organizations in coastal Brooklyn.

Thank you, Lions Club!

GBCares “Gerritsen Beach Long Term Recovery Project” is pleased to announce the generous support of the Flatlands Lions Club and Lions Club International who have granted the organization $40,000 to assist in the rebuilding of Gerritsen Beach. They will be presenting a check to Gerritsen Beach Cares at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the GB Cares headquarters located at 2676 Gerritsen Ave.

Immediately after Hurricane Sandy, The Flatlands Lions mobilized, providing manpower as well as food and clothing and emergency supplies to provide support to Gerritsen Beach, the Rockaways and other hard hit areas. However, it soon became apparent more would be needed to combat the extensive devastation of the storm. The Flatlands Club, with support of the MD 20-K1 Lions Alert Team, applied and received a $40,000 grant from the Lions Clubs International to support the relief efforts in Gerritsen Beach, which were being coordinated by GBCares, who had rapidly developed a cooperative program that joined community, civic and relief groups together to provide long term relief to the area. The grant will provide much needed building supplies to help support this volunteer-based multi-agency rebuilding project. The Flatlands Lions believe that the GBcares program provides a model for future city-wide recovery efforts and will continue their support for this invaluable work that helps our neighbors in their time of need.

The Flatlands Lions Club, a member of the MD-20 K1 Brooklyn Queens Lions and Lions Clubs International, have been serving the community for over 50 years, supporting vision, and health programs and providing assistance to those in need. In recent years The Flatlands Lions have signature activities that support Ovarian Cancer research (T.E.A.L. Walk), young burn victims (The Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp) and also sponsor a youth club, the Flatlands Leos, which develops and nurtures community service and civic responsibility values in middle school children.

2013 Gerritsen Beach Cares Membership Drive

Dear Neighbor,

This year has been one of radical change for all of us and for GB Cares. Many of us have suffered greatly because of Super Storm Sandy. GB Cares has had to adapt its mission statement to stand in the gap in the recovery of Gerritsen Beach. We never imagined that our community-based service organization would be thrust into the forefront of at first a relief, and now a recovery, operation.

As most of you know our Chairman, Michael Taylor, resigned from the organization in February. Without Mike’s leadership and vision we would not have been in a position to take on the monumental task of relief and rebuilding. There are not enough words to thank Mike for all his hours of selfless dedication to GB Cares and the Gerritsen Beach neighborhood.

Because of GB Cares’ standing and involvement in community affairs we were recognized as a “go to” organization. We were quickly able to partner with Heart 911, Tunnel to Towers, and other organizations. We were able to get grants from the Robin Hood Foundation, the Brooklyn Community Group, other donor organizations and many private citizens. We would like to express a sincere and very hearty Thank You for these donations! These funds are being used to help our residents and rebuild our neighborhood. We will be moving into an office on Gerritsen Avenue and will continue to partner with several groups that are looking to help our neighbors and community.

We are now starting our annual membership drive. As in years past, all of the dues money and donations go directly back into our community.  Your money will go to support our local organizations, neighborhood charitable causes, and our operations. Your membership money also supports GB Cares programs and events such as the Halloween Fest, the Holiday Lights and the U.S. Flag display on Gerritsen Avenue.

Please renew your membership or become a member of Gerritsen Beach Cares. Our motto of “We Care, We Live Here” has never been more meaningful, and with your membership you’ll be showing you care, and be helping us help Gerritsen Beach be better than ever.

Please consider volunteering as well – we need you now more than ever! Just come up to the site or call the number above.

Sincerely,

John Douglas
President
